Drive Chain Adjustment
INTENDED: Banshee, Others | PERFORMED ON: Banshee | DIFFICULTY: 2/10

INTRO: Keeping your drive chain tightened will help prevent premature wear of parts and possible damage that can occur if the chain were to slip off the sprockets. In extreme cases, the chain can come off and be forced into the front sprocket housing and cause severe damage to the sprocket, chain, or even the engine case. This can especially be a problem if it happens out on the trail and you have no way back home. For these reasons, keep your chain at the correct tension at all times, and check it before every ride. Here are the step by step instructions on adjusting the chain for a Banshee, but will also apply to Blasters and Warriors.

STEP ONE: It is reccomended that before starting, you spray all bolts/nuts involved with a penetrating oil. Then put the quad up on a stand so the back tires are not touching the ground. Next you need to loosen the top bolt that holds the axle carrier to the swingarm. Use a 17mm wrench on both ends and just loosen it, do not remove the nut or bolt itself.

STEP TWO: Now do the same with the bottom bolt directly under the axle carrier. In this case you use a 17mm on the left and a 14mm on the right side. Again, loosen, but do not remove.

STEP THREE: Now move to the 2 chain adjusters sticking out of the back. Take a 12mm wrench or an adjustable wrench, like in the photo, and loosen the nut that is tightened against the adjuster itself. Back this nut all the way off until it stops against the head of the adjuster bolt. Remember to do this for both adjusters, the left and the right one.

STEP FOUR: Next you will need a 10mm wrench or socket to begin to screw the adjuster bolts in. Turn it a half a turn at a time, then move to the other one and do the same. Do this while keeping an eye on the grooved marks on the adjusters ( 2 small arrows ) to make sure they are equal on both sides. Continue doing this until you reach the desired tension of the chain.

STEP FIVE: You want to be able to grab the top of the chain in the middle and move it down a half of an inch, and up a half of an inch for a total of 1 inch movement. This is the desired tension.

STEP SIX: Now that you have the chain where you want it, you need to tighten the 12mm nuts that are on both adjuster bolts. After you do this, go back and tighten the bolt under the axle carrier, then tighten the top bolt, and you're done! Lube your chain and go riding!
